What is skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation is a condition which affects the appearance of the
skin tone. It happens due to overproduction of melanin in melanocytes in the skin. When
there’s an imbalance in melanin production, you may notice different coloured spots or
shading. Typically, it occurs most commonly on the face but it can occur all over the body.

What causes hyper-pigmentation?

There are many causes of hyper-pigmentation. Changes to the melanin levels in your skin can occur because of:

How does skin pigmentation removal work?

At RLC, we use laser treatments for pigmentation removal. It works by producing wavelengths of strong light that are absorbed into the skin’s pigmented lesions. The light then breaks up the melanin pigment. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and causes the destruction of the melanin-rich cells. This triggers the body’s natural healing process to stimulate the growth of new, healthy skin tissue. The pigment is then drawn to the surface where it can be shed with the outer layer of the skin during skin cell turnover. Uneven skin tones will then start to disappear.

Traditional skin pigmentation treatments are slightly painful or tingly
Depending on your skin type and the treatment area, treatment times can last from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the treated area. Our staff will be able to advise on a personalised treatment plan.
Many clients notice improvements straight away. However, some of our clients require a few more treatments. The number of treatments you require will depend on your skin type, skin condition, level of treatment and how well you react. Your therapist can discuss this with you though.
